# Your B2B Buyers Are Giving Up Before They Buy

If your customers are still picking up the phone to place orders, the platform is usually why. And it is a more fixable problem than most businesses realise.

Not because your prices are wrong, your product range is lacking, or they have found a better supplier. They are giving up because they cannot find what they are looking for. And on most B2B ecommerce platforms, that is a harder problem than it sounds.

## The search problem nobody talks about

B2C ecommerce has invested heavily in search and navigation for years.

The sites that B2B buyers use in their personal lives, including Screwfix, Amazon, and Victorian Plumbing, have set an expectation of fast, intelligent search, filters that actually narrow results, and navigation that leads somewhere useful.

Then those same buyers log into their trade account and are confronted with something that feels like it was built in a different decade. A cluttered menu with twelve top-level categories and no clear logic. A search bar that returns 400 results for a product code. Filters that do not stack. A category page that requires six clicks to reach the item they order every week.

It is not a dramatic failure and nobody complains about it loudly. They just pick up the phone instead, which is exactly the problem.

## Is your catalogue effectively invisible to your buyers?

If they cannot find it in a few clicks, most of them will not find it at all.

## The phone call is not a success

There is a version of this story where a B2B business looks at its phone and email order volume and concludes that its customers prefer to order that way. That conclusion is usually wrong.

What customers prefer is getting what they need without friction. If the portal makes that harder than a phone call, the phone wins. Not because buyers want to call, but because calling works and the portal does not.

Every phone call that replaces an online order is a cost the business carries quietly. Someone picks up, someone processes the order manually, someone keys it into the system, and that cost multiplies across every order, every week, and every customer who tried the portal once, found it frustrating, and went back to what they knew. The portal adoption problem and the search problem are, in most cases, the same problem.

From Frustration to Functionality:

## Why Good Hand Switched to Symphony Commerce

Introduction: Replacing a Decade of Digital Stagnation

Good Hand, a specialist B2B engineering manufacturer and distributor, had relied on their previous provider ecommerce platform for over 11 years. During that time, their business evolved - but their digital tools didn’t. Managing a catalogue of 24,000+ highly technical products and supporting over 6,000 trade customers had become increasingly complex. Without integration with their ERP system (Interprise),modern automation, or customer-focused UX, day-to-day operations were bogged down by inefficiencies.

[Read Full Case Study](https://www.symphonycommerce.io/pages/case-study-good-hand)

## What bad navigation actually costs

The impact of poor search and navigation rarely appears on a report, but it shows up in conversion rates that never improve despite a functioning platform, in average order values that stay flat because buyers order what they can find rather than what they actually need, and in repeat visit rates that plateau because the experience of using the site is just effortful enough to make people think twice.

It shows up in catalogue underperformance too. A business might stock 10,000 products, but if buyers can only reliably find 500 of them, the remaining 9,500 are effectively invisible, not because they are not listed, but because they cannot be found. And it shows up in the sales team's workload, because when the platform does not surface the right products, buyers call to ask, and the time that could have been spent on new business gets spent on assisted ordering for accounts that should be self-serving.

## What B2B search actually needs to do

B2B search is not the same problem as B2C search.

A consumer searching for a television is making a discovery purchase and might not know exactly what they want, so broad results, editorial recommendations, and inspiration all have a role. A trade buyer is doing something fundamentally different. They know what they want and need to find it in as few steps as possible, confirm it is in stock and correctly priced for their account, and place the order.

That means B2B search needs to solve for precision rather than discovery. It needs to handle product codes, partial codes, and the way buyers actually type when they are searching from a warehouse floor or a van. It needs to understand that a search for "M8 bolt zinc 30mm" and "zinc M8 x 30" are the same thing, and surface the right variant immediately rather than returning a page of loosely related results.

It also needs to do all of that within an account-specific context, because the products visible to one customer may not be the same as those visible to another and the prices are almost certainly different. A search result that shows a product the buyer is not contracted for, or a price that is not their price, is not just unhelpful. It actively damages trust.

## When was the last time you tried to find something on your own platform?

Most businesses are surprised by what they discover. It is worth five minutes to find out.

## Navigation is a structure problem

Search handles intent and navigation handles orientation. A buyer who does not know the exact product code needs to be able to browse to it in a logical, efficient sequence, and that requires a navigation structure that reflects how buyers think about products rather than how the business organises its warehouse.

Most B2B navigation fails because it was designed by people who know the product range intimately and built for buyers who are assumed to have the same knowledge.

Categories that make perfect sense internally are opaque to a buyer who is new to the account or ordering outside their usual range. A cluttered mega menu is one of the most common complaints we hear, with too many options, too little hierarchy, and no clear signal about where to start. Buyers scan it, find nothing obvious, go to the search bar, and if the search bar also fails them, they leave.

The fix is not a smaller menu but a better-structured one, with fewer top-level categories, clearer subcategory logic, and navigation built around buying journeys rather than product taxonomies.

That is not a minor operational improvement. It is a fundamentally different relationship between a business and its ecommerce.

## Filtering: the difference between a manageable catalogue and an overwhelming one

For businesses with large product ranges, filtering is not a nice-to-have but the primary mechanism by which buyers narrow from thousands of products to the one they need.

Basic filtering by category, price, or brand is table stakes. What B2B buyers actually need is faceted filtering that stacks, meaning the ability to filter by specification, compatibility, stock availability, unit of measure, and account-specific attributes all at once, without losing the results of previous selections.

Without stacking filters, a buyer searching within a large category has no efficient path to the right product and either scrolls through pages of results or gives up. The outcome is predictable: high bounce rates on category pages, low conversion on the accounts with the most complex requirements, and a catalogue that is technically comprehensive but practically unusable.

## Getting it right

The businesses that solve this do not necessarily have the most sophisticated technology. They have the clearest understanding of how their buyers actually search and browse, and a platform that gives them the tools to improve that experience continuously without a development ticket for every change.

It starts with knowing what buyers are searching for and not finding. Search analytics are one of the most underused assets in B2B ecommerce, and the terms that return no results, or that return results buyers do not click on, are a direct map to where the catalogue is failing. It continues with navigation that gets tested against real buyers rather than internal assumptions, because what feels logical to a product manager who has worked with a range for ten years is often not logical to a buyer who visits the site once a week.

Good Hand put it simply at the start of their project with us. The goal was the fewest possible clicks to the payment page. That is the right frame for the entire problem: not the most impressive search technology or the most comprehensive filtering system, but the shortest path from intent to order for the buyers who matter most. If your platform is not delivering that, it is not a minor inconvenience. It is costing you orders every day.
